Conference Weekend

We had a fantastic General Conference weekend.  We turned the plum couch around, brought in the newly assembled rocking chair and gathered around the computer for all four sessions.

We had grapes, clementines, chips, and I made tuna salad, egg salad, spinach artichoke dip, deviled eggs for our lunches.  Good eating!  Each day, we just soaked up all the great messages and had the luxury of relaxing in between sessions.

Tamara and Bacon during the Sunday afternoon session.

Steve watched from the table.

Sadie and Trissy are becoming bessies.  Although, Sadie still insists on going outside first and she has to snarl at Trissy to tell her this- every time!

Of course, I had a project to do while I watched.  Our stake humanitarian project day is in July and we will be making cute animal puppets like these to give to local day-cares.  SO EASY to make.

Each member of the stake Relief Society presidency is making some sample puppets (cows, pigs, bears).  We will also make these medical play dolls for hospitals and clinics to use with their young patients.

They are used for demonstrating how an IV will be inserted and other medical procedures.  They have no face so the children can color in their features (showing how they might really be feeling).  I stuffed 14 of these babies
and I am in the process of making their hospital gowns.

We will give each ward or branch Relief Society president one puppet and one doll to take back to their units to show the sisters what we plan to do.

Beckie, this photo is for you!  Our yard is in full bloom and, with so many hyacinths in every flower bed, it smells delicious.  Wish I could send a real bouquet to you.

Remember those doggie stairs we bought for Sadie to get on and off our bed?  Well, she has mastered the going up part really well.  She does it all the time.  However, she is still hesitant to go down on her own.  If I nudge her little bottom to the edge of the bed, she will step down but otherwise, she will sit in the middle of our bed and bark to be let down!  Oh, Sadie.

Look for both Trissy and Sadie sporting their spring haircuts next blog......

Easter

We went to St. Louis for the Easter weekend.

We (Sarah, Steve, and I) arrived early Saturday morning so we could be part of the egg hunt.

We left for the temple around 9:30 and purchased Sarah’s temple clothes for her birthday at the distribution center before attending the 11:00 session.  Julina and Alex and family had originally planned to arrive in St. Louis around noon but Alex’s son, Stratton, had a baseball game that didn’t end until 11:00 so that and detoured traffic caused them to pull in sometime around 4:00.  That left no time for lunch with Alex and Julina, no visit to the Science Center.  All we did was have Easter dinner at Emily’s.  The menu was a repeat of our Sunday dinner the week before – ham, potatoes supreme (we tried it using French onion dip instead of sour cream – THAT was a game changer), asparagus, and strawberry pie.  It occurs to me that I don’t think many of you have that recipe so here it is.  I have now made three of them in the last month – mmmmmmm.

Florin Young’s Strawberry Pie
1 quart strawberries
4 oz. cream cheese
1 baked and cooled 9” pie crust
1 ¼ cups sugar
3-4 Tbs. corn starch
Dash salt
1 Tbs. lemon juice
½ cup cream – whipped and sweetened with powdered sugar to taste

Wash, hull, and drain berries.  Work the cream cheese until soft – add a dash of milk to make it easier to spread.  Spread over the bottom of the pie crust.  Select half of the choice berries  (I try to keep them all the same size) and press firmly into the cream cheese, tips up.  Mash remaining berries, measure and, if necessary, add water to make 1 ½ cups of liquid.  Place in a microwave-safe bowl and mix in sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, and salt and cook on high in microwave in one-minute intervals, stirring after each minute, until mixture turns thick and clear.  Remove from heat and cool.  Pour over and around the berries. Chill at least 3 hours.  Whip the cream and top the pie.

Due to the crowd, we decided to get a hotel room for Steve, Julina, Sarah and me to sleep.  We stayed at the Comfort Inn near the airport.  Alex, his two children – Shiloh and Stratton – and his mother, Imogene stayed in the Hampton Inn, also near the airport.

Sunday morning, little Quinn Atticus was blessed in church.  Steven and Melanie joined us that day for the event. Tamara went to Montgomery City to be with her parents and her brother and his family who were down from Michagan for the holiday.

I was able to get a photo of Julina with Alex and his family before they drove back to Indianapolis.

Lucy let Uncle Steve hold her!

I love this photo of Noah holding his baby brother

We had leftover ham for lunch before driving home to Columbia.  It was a lovely Easter weekend.
And, Monday, it was back to school and reality. Sigh. Thankfully, I had a light day on Monday to ease my way back into my busy life.
